Deputy Terminated

AUGUSTA, GA (PR) - On Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at approximately 8:00 pm, Deputies responded to an address on the 2800 block of Anne Street where it was alleged an off-duty uniformed deputy from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office was involved in the physical abuse of a 12 year old child.

Based on the information and evidence obtained at the scene and after consulting with the District Attorney's office; the deputy, now identified as Alton A. Walker was detained and criminal charges were pending.

On Wednesday, February 11, 2015, Investigators applied for and obtained arrest warrants for Deputy Walker for the felony charges of False Imprisonment and Cruelty to Children in the 1st Degree. Because Deputy Walker was representing himself as a Richmond County deputy, the warrants had to be signed by a Superior Court judge, which was done so this morning.

Deputy Walker is accused of going to a friend’s house in an attempt to provide discipline for what was described as an unruly 12 year old boy. Deputy Walker is accused of handcuffing the juvenile to a basketball goal in the back yard of the residence and striking him several times in the face with an open hand and once in the chest with a closed fist.

Deputy Walker also produced his Taser, pointed it at the juvenile and “arced “it several times in an effort to scare the juvenile.  The Taser never made contact with the juvenile. Deputy Walker is also accused of striking the juvenile several times on his legs with his ASP baton but the only visible marks observed on the juvenile were to his wrists.

The juvenile was checked at the scene by EMS. Deputy Walker was not related to the juvenile. Based on this incident, Deputy Walker was terminated from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, effective immediately.

This is now a criminal investigation therefore certain aspects of the investigation cannot be revealed except through the normal criminal justice process.
