Animals Harmed for Research versus Entertainment

By now you are aware that the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has made a number of claims questioning the care and treatment of animals at Georgia Regents University (GRU).

The video that was distributed by the HSUS on Tuesday misrepresents the realities of scientific studies conducted at GRU. As a leading research university, we take our mission to improve health care seriously. Animal research has provided many of today’s medical advancements, which have alleviated pain and suffering, improved human health, and saved countless lives.

Many of you have shared your concerns with us, and we appreciate the response of a caring community committed to the ethical treatment of animals. We care, too. GRU recognizes its legal and ethical responsibilities to ensure that animals are not used needlessly and are spared all unnecessary distress. To this end, the university adheres to all applicable federal, state, local, and institutional laws and guidelines governing animal research, and maintains a laboratory animal science program directed by veterinarians specializing in laboratory animal medicine.

You may see groups gathered on or near campus today in protest of the animal research done at GRU. Please treat these visitors with the same respect we strive to provide to all guests on our campus.

As a university, we believe we have not only a legal but ethical responsibility to ensure that animals are used judiciously in research.  GRU will continue to strive to provide the most humane treatment of animals in our care.

Thank you for your support and commitment to the mission and values of our university.
