AUGUSTA, GA (Christen Carter)– More than 50 local merchants and community organizers are calling Georgia Regents University students, faculty, and staff to “Go Downtown” Thursday, Jan. 16, for a day complete with music, discounts, and fireworks.
“Our hope with ‘Go Downtown’ is to foster relationships between Augusta’s downtown merchants and the Georgia Regents University community,” said Cedric Johnson, GRU Director of Community Relations. “As one of the largest employers in our area and a principal driver for economic development, GRU serves as a community anchor, attracting new residents, businesses, and opportunities. This is an excellent opportunity to create synergies that further the city’s goals and support the vision of our university.”
Live performances will begin at 6 p.m. in the Augusta Common, followed by a fireworks display. Shuttle service is available to the university community from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“Augusta's downtown district is the heart of our city and a mecca for dining, shopping, and entertainment,” said Margaret Woodard, Executive Director of Augusta’s Downtown Development Authority. “We are committed to building a partnership with GRU and look to grow and expand ‘Go Downtown’ into a monthly celebration of our city and all that we have to offer our residents and those who visit.”
The downtown area includes the city blocks bounded by 15th and 5th Streets, the riverfront, and the third level of the canal. It also includes attractions such as the Trade Exhibit & Event Center and Imperial Theatre.
