3rd Annual Literary Festival in Augusta

AUGUSTA, GA (Corey Washington) - The Augusta Literary Festival is proud to announce the winner of the 2014 Yerby Award. The Yerby winner is Charmaine Zimmerman-Brackett, a local writer. Her teary eyed reaction was priceless, as she accepted her award in an arm sling. She beat out a very talented pool of authors. Charmaine’s win is even more impressive since her book, The Key of Elyon, is her first.

The second place winner was Tyora Moody with her book, When Rain Falls.  Third place was Regina Jeffers with, The Mysterious Death of Mr. Darcy.  Jessica Hawke, a local educator, came in fourth place with her book, Phantom Touch.  Rounding out our finalists in fifth place was Alicia Michaels with her fantasy novel, Child of the Sacred Earth.
Last year’s inaugural Yerby winner was Ted Dunagan, multiple GA author of the year, with his book, Trouble on the Tombigbee.

AUGUSTA, GA (Corey Washington) - On Saturday, March 1st, from 9-5 PM, Augusta will once again embrace the literary world with both arms wide open by hosting the 3rd Annual Augusta Literary Festival. Fifty local and national authors will be on hand at the main library branch on 823 Telfair St. in Downtown Augusta, Georgia. The Augusta Literary Festival (ALF) will be the climax of two days of literary excitement, starting with activities planned for Friday, February 28th.

The festivities kick off at the main library branch on Friday, Feb. 28th with two workshops designed for both prospective and current authors. The first workshop will be from 10-12, and is titled, Marketing and the Modern Author. It will be taught by Hildie McQueen (Amazon Best Selling author). The second workshop will be from 2-4 and is titled Advanced Novel Writing: Tips and Techniques that will take your Novel to the Next Level. National Best Selling Author Karen Gillespie will be the instructor for this workshop.

At 1 PM on Friday, on the campus of Paine College, there will be a Roundtable Discussion with the fivefinalists of the Yerby Award for Literary Fiction. This discussion will be moderated by Dr. Anthony Neal,Chair of the Yerby Selection Committee. After the discussion, there will be a tour of the Yerby House on Paine’s campus.

Friday’s activities will be concluded with the awarding of the 2nd Annual Yerby Award for Literary Fiction. All media, participating authors, and guests, are invited to attend. This event will begin at 6 PM at the main library branch on 823 Telfair St. Refreshments and live jazz by guitarist Robert Reid will be offered at the event.

Top Five Finalists for the 2014 Yerby Award

The Yerby selection committee is proud to announce the top five candidates for the 2nd annual Yerby Literary Award for Fiction.  The Finalists are (in no particular order):

Please note: The five finalists will be at the Yerby House on the campus of Paine College at 1:00 pm, February 28, 2014 for the Yerby Roundtable discussion.  Roundtable Discussion Topic: In view of your work, what does it mean to win an award with Frank Yerby’s name?  This discussion will be moderated by Dr. Anthony Neal, Chair of the Yerby Selection Committee.  After the discussion, there will be a tour of the Yerby House on Paine’s campus.

Later that Friday evening from 6-8 at the Main Library Branch on 823 Telfair St., the 1st, 2nd, and 3rdPlace winners will receive their awards at the author’s reception.  Frank Yerby’s nephew, Gerald Yerby will be on hand to personally congratulate them.

Frank Yerby – Augusta’s Literary Giant
Frank Yerby was born in Augusta, Georgia and graduated from Paine College. He started his career writing romance novels set in the antebellum South, but in the 1950’s switched to historical novels.
He had a series of best-selling novels which included The Foxes Harrow, a best seller which sold over a million copies, and was later made into a movie. Yerby was the first African American to become a millionaire from his pen.
In 1955, he moved to Spain where he spent the remainder of his life.
