Xenophobia as Excuse to Do Nothing

AUGUSTA, GAJohn Barrow (Democratic Party) is Georgia District 12’s representative to the United States House of Representatives. As one of his constituents, I met with him today. I pressed for two issues: decriminalization of narcotics and immigration reform.
For decriminalization of narcotics, he told me not to hold my breath.
Then he told Anibal Ibarra and me that he would not support immigration reform until the border was secured. He said people were fearful and would not support immigration reform until they thought the border was secure.
If the United States is going to wait for its white people to stop being scared of non-whites, then the entire country ought not to hold its breath.
A politician does what he or she feels will get him/her the votes to win the next election. A leader would guide his/her constituents to the sane, moral, humane and safer policies whatever the constituents’ misapprehensions.
It’s obvious into which category John Barrow falls.

"For a great many people in this country, the right to keep and bear arms is not just a recreational thing for hunting or something like that -- it involves personal defense and home defense. This is how many people regard it," Barrow said. "That is deeply in the roots of the 2nd Amendment and what it's all about."

Amendment II to the US Constitution

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. (1791)

On June 28, 2012, Democratic U.S. Rep. John Barrow was one of 17 Democrats who voted to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt due to the Fast and Furious program.

It was the first time in U.S. history in which the House of Representatives had held a member of the President's cabinet in contempt and the nation's Attorney General specifically.

"My policy is that we need to secure the border, we need to secure the jobs and we need to secure the benefits. If you do those things, the problem will take care of itself," Barrow said.

On immigration, Barrow said he supports efforts to curb illegal immigration and the E-Verify system that forces employers to check the immigration status of prospective hires. Meanwhile he opposes registration requirement for possession of firearms.

The Second Amendment was meant to protect slave owners from uprisings.

“The Second Amendment comes from the right to protect themselves from slave revolts, and from uprisings by Native Americans. So, a revolt from people who were stolen from their land, or revolt from people whose land was stolen from, that’s what the genesis of the Second Amendment is.”

While President Obama Spoke
As I write this email, immigrant number 1,593,471 is being deported. More people will be deported by the time you read this. At this rate, President Obama is going to deport more people in six years than if you add up every person in U.S. history who was deported before 1997.
President Obama unveiled his immigration plan today. A group of U.S. Senators unveiled their plan yesterday. Missing in all of this discussion was the cost of inaction up to this point, and what the cost of inaction moving forward will be. We need to remind President Obama and Congress what happens every minute they waste without fixing our broken immigration system.
We know these people aren't just numbers. The next person being deported this very minute could be a student who knows only this country as her home, or it could be a father doing everything he can to provide for his family.
