Fort Gordon will reopen Gate 2 for the morning and afternoon commuting periods only, beginning at 3 p.m. today. The military base announced last week "Due to the furlough of Fort Gordon civilians next week, only Gate 1 and Gate 5 will be open for traffic to enter and exit the installation beginning Monday
"Gate 2, accessible off East Robinson Ave. in Grovetown, will be open from 5:30 to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday for inbound and outbound traffic. It will reopen from 3 to 6:30 p.m. each afternoon, for outbound traffic only. Gate 2 will remain closed at all other times and on weekends.
Hours of operation for Gate 1 and Gate 5 remain the same. Gate 1 will remain open 24 hours daily, and Gate 5 will be open from 4:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. daily. Gate 3 will remain closed, and commercial traffic will continue to access Fort Gordon via Gate 1.
Based on a review of this morning’s commute, the installation leadership decided to redistribute some guards and military policemen in order to reopen Gate 2. While this will not significantly increase the inbound capacity of the gates, it will redistribute some of the traffic that converged on Gate 1, Gordon Highway and Jimmy Dyess Parkway this morning.
Fort Gordon will continue to assess the situation daily and make adjustments as warranted."
