"Let Freedom Ring" From Augusta

The Unitarian Universalist Church of Augusta is joining with the King Center and the 50th Anniversary Coalition to help culminate the 50th anniversary of The March on Washington and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech with “Let Freedom Ring” bell-ringing events across the country at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on August 28th, a half-century to the minute after Dr. King delivered his historic address.

"Let Freedom Ring" will conclude seven-days of events commemorating the March on Washington and Dr. King’s Dream speech. For the millions who can’t come to Washington, D.C. for the seven-day program, the local ‘Let Freedom Ring’ programs will provide a unique opportunity to get involved in a poignant nation-wide and global day of unity in their respective hometowns.
The “Let Freedom Ring” event at UUCA will begin at 2:45 p.m. with the dedication on the premises of a bell that has been donated by Mrs. Betty Williams, mother of UUCA Minister Reverend Doctor Gaye Ortiz.  After the bell is rung at 3:00 p.m. members of the congregation will participate in a public reading of the “I Have a Dream” speech.

“Let Freedom Ring” is a recurring theme in the speech:
. . . So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire.  Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York.  Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!  Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado! Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California!  But not only that, let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!  Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!  Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. . .
