New Leadership at Confucius Institute

AUGUSTA, GA (PR) – Dr. Cindi Chance has been named director of the Georgia Regents University Confucius Institute. Chance previously served as the dean of the GRU College of Education for three years. “I’m honored to represent this cultural centerpiece that brings GRU and the local Chinese community together,” Chance said. “Chinese heritage in the Augusta area is so rich, dating back to the late 1800s. Court Orders Prompt Release of Immigrant Children

WASHINGTON, DC (PR) - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and the American Immigration Council (Council) welcome a decision released Friday evening by U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee in Flores v. Lynch, No. 85-04544 (C.D.Ca.), which ruled that children should generally be released from detention within five days—preferably to a parent, including a parent with whom they were apprehended. The government must implement the Court’s ruling by October 23, 2015.

To Be or Not To Be in SPLOST

AUGUSTA, GA (Anibal Ibarra) - UPDATE - The Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) 7 will be on the ballot November 3 to be approved by the voters of Richmond County. The final list of projects to be covered by the sales tax collection, in the amount of $215.5 million, is Non Governmental Organization (NGO) free. A last minute attempt to include $10 million to help 6 of over 2,000 non-profits entities in Augusta failed for lack of second to the motion.

Library to Host 2015 Americas Award for Children’s and Young Adult Literature

WASHINGTON, DC (PR) - Author and illustrator Duncan Tonatiuh will be honored for his book “Separate is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez & Her Family’s Fight for Desegregation,” (Abrams Books, 2014). Tonatiuh, whose roots are both Mexican and American, has won both the Pura Belpre Illustrator Award and the Tomás Rivera Mexican American children's book award for previous works.

Stronger Standards for People Applying Pesticides

WASHINGTON, DC (PR) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing stronger standards for pesticide applicators who apply “restricted-use” pesticides.  These pesticides are not available for purchase by the general public, require special handling, and may only be applied by a certified applicator or someone working under his or her direct supervision.

The State of City Boards Members

AUGUSTA, GA (Anibal Ibarra) - The selection, replacement and removal of city boards members are going to be discussed by the Richmond County Commission during the first session in August. Former Augusta Mayor Bob Young is a Republican candidate for Georgia State House District 123. He is the Chairman of the Urban Redevelopment Agency (URA) but his potencial removal is not included in the agenda. For some residents Young should resign to his current position, but in Augusta politics “conflict of interest” usually is not taken seriously. Two sitting Commissioners censured by ethics violations were reelected. 

SPLOST 7 Public Information Session

AUGUSTA, GA (Anibal Ibarra) – UPDATE: The proposed costs for the SPLOST 7 package was reduced to $210,500,000. The recommendation made by the city Administrator - with cero money for outside agencies - will be voted on by the Commission by August 18. The current proposal might survive or some changes could be made to include Paine College request and others.
