Conjoined Twins Born in Augusta Died

AUGUSTA, GA (11/12) (PR) — The conjoined twins receiving treatment in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital of Georgia died last night due to multiple complex medical complications. The boys—who shared a heart and liver—were delivered by C-section on Monday at the Georgia Regents Medical Center and remained in critical condition in the NICU in the adjoining children’s hospital for two days.

Referendum on SPLOST 7

Immigration Agents in Fulton County Jails

ATLANTA, GA (PR) – The Georgia Not1More Deportation Coalition, a statewide coalition of immigrant rights advocates and organizers, today released the details of a proposed agreement between Fulton County and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to place immigration agents in Fulton County jails. The proposal is an expansion of ICE’s “Priority Enforcement Program,” also known as PEP.

Refugees Shouldn’t Be in Detention Centers

WASHINGTON, DC (PR) – The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights today released its annual report to the President and Congress examining the civil rights and due process conditions at immigration detention facilities, as well as the conditions of family detainees. In the Statutory Enforcement Report: The State of Civil Rights at Immigration Detention Facilities, the Commission found that some detention centers and contracted facilities are not fully complying with detention standards regarding medical care, legal information and other basic standards of treatment.

WASHINGTON, DC (PR) — Today, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) responded to news of the arrest of Blanca Borrego, a Latina mom and undocumented woman, in Northeast Women's Healthcare clinic in Atascocita, Texas. Borrego had been sitting in the waiting room for nearly two hours when staff called her into an exam room, where she was met by Harris County Sheriff’s deputies, who arrested her for allegedly using a false ID and handcuffed her in front of her daughters who now fear their mother's deportation and their family torn apart.

New Precinct Information Cards for Voters

Court Orders Prompt Release of Immigrant Children

WASHINGTON, DC (PR) - The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and the American Immigration Council (Council) welcome a decision released Friday evening by U.S. District Judge Dolly Gee in Flores v. Lynch, No. 85-04544 (C.D.Ca.), which ruled that children should generally be released from detention within five days—preferably to a parent, including a parent with whom they were apprehended. The government must implement the Court’s ruling by October 23, 2015.

Stronger Standards for People Applying Pesticides

Former Augusta Mayor Bob Young is a Republican candidate for Georgia State House District 123. He is the Chairman of the Urban Redevelopment Agency (URA) but his potencial removal is not included in the agenda. For some residents Young should resign to his current position, but in Augusta politics “conflict of interest” usually is not taken seriously. Two sitting Commissioners censured by ethics violations were reelected. 

SPLOST 7 Public Information Session

AUGUSTA, GA (Anibal Ibarra) – UPDATE: The proposed costs for the SPLOST 7 package was reduced to $210,500,000. The recommendation made by the city Administrator - with cero money for outside agencies - will be voted on by the Commission by August 18. Law Enforcement Funding at Risk

Under various legislative proposals, funding for critical law enforcement grants to cities and counties that have community trust policies are in danger. These policies include a wide range of practices and laws that specify how state and local law enforcement officials should interact with federal immigration officials. Georgia could lose around $770.000.

California can succeed in providing health care for all of its undocumented immigrants if the Asian and Pacific Islander communities band together with the Hispanic community and push for it, said Sen. AUGUSTA, GA (PR) – There were 123 heat-related deaths across the nation in 2014, according to the National Weather Service. “People suffer heat-related illnesses when their bodies are unable to compensate and properly cool themselves,” said Dr. Richard Schwartz, chair of emergency medicine at Georgia Regents University. “No matter if you’re in the garden, on the playing field, at the beach or at the construction site, summer activity should be balanced with measures that aid the body’s cooling mechanisms and prevent heat-related illness.”

Hispanic Life Expectancy and Social Security

WASHINGTON, DC (PR) - The Social Security Board of Trustees released its annual report on the long-term financial status of the Social Security Trust Funds.  The combined asset reserves of the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) Trust Funds are projected to become depleted in 2034, one year later than projected last year, with 79 percent of benefits payable at that time.  The DI Trust Fund will become depleted in 2016, unchanged from last year’s estimate, with 81 percent of benefits still payable.

Maintaining the Legacy

AUGUSTA, GA (Anibal Ibarra) - Once considered a park that celebrates the legacy and aspirations of the oldest Black church in the United States, honoring the historic Springfield Baptist Church, the landscaped setting for two important sculptures by Richard Hunt is near an eyesore. The highlight of the park, the "Tower of Aspiration," a 45-foot stainless steel sculpture, due to the lack of maintenance in the 2.5-acre park looks more like a place of desperation.

UPDATE: Weeks after being tapped to sculpt a statue of Martin Luther King Jr. at Georgia State Capitol, Andy Davis was pronounced dead July 12 around 10 p.m. Governor Nathan Deal signed an order in 2013 to remove a statue of Tom Watson, a segregationist U.S. Senator known for his racist attacks on blacks. Several Democratic leaders pushed him to replace it with a statue of King. The Confederate Flag was removed from South Carolina State Capitol grounds Friday morning. Davis was struck from behind by a pickup truck while stopping at a red light on his motorcycle later that night in Atlanta.
