AUGUSTA, GA (PR) 7/5/2014 - On the evening of July 4th, the Richmond County Sheriff Office conducted 3 road safety check stops during a 5 hour period.  On a positive note, compared to previous nights with road checks, only 13 persons were arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI). Although that number still needs to continue to be lowered it is far better results than those from last year during Operation Thunder (where many nights we saw 40 persons being arrested for DUI).  However, we did notice that we continue to have a major problem with children not being placed in child safety seats. 55 citations were issued for this violation which does not take into account warnings issued for minor child seat violations.

According to data from NHTSA, during July 4th holiday period over the last five years (from 2008 to 2012), 765 people lost their lives in crashes involving drivers with a BAC of .08 or more. These fatalities account for 40% percent of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities over this same five-year period.

The RCSO along with the Georgia State Patrol and those from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety will continue with a heightened presence through Sunday evening on our roadways in an effort to prevent crashes. DNR will also be on the water, including the Savannah River, doing their best to keep boaters safe.  Typically during a 4th of July weekend over 50% of crashes are directly related to alcohol consumption.  As of Saturday, July 5th, at 3:00pm, Richmond County roadways have not had any crashes resulting in serious injuries or fatalities.

Plan Ahead, Don't Drink and Drive or allow those you love to do so.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is asking for assistance from the public regarding “entering autos” within Richmond County.  We are experiencing an increase of automobiles being entered illegally and items being stolen from within the vehicles.  In the majority of all cases, these vehicles are parked in neighborhoods on the street or within shopping centers and are left unlocked; often times, items of value are left visible within the vehicle. Just this past weekend, we had 10 vehicles within the Meadowbrook area and 14 in the Manchester area off of Windsor Spring Road.

Assistance is needed by taking precautionary measures such as placing your vehicle within your garage or at least within the driveway, removing valuable items from vehicles, and locking your car doors whenever exiting the vehicle.  Additional safety tips are available on www.RCSOGA.org
